The Enneagram

The Enneagram is a powerful personality typing system that examines your core motivations, fears, and desires. There are nine types, and they are interconnected in various ways. The Enneagram system is simple, but it can go very deep when your core type is viewed alongside your wing, your instinct, your tritype, and your level of overall health.

Your Enneagram type doesn’t define you. It’s actually the story you have told yourself to survive. Beyond fear, anger, or shame, is your true self, without your type’s survival mode.

For example, as a Type Nine (a peacemaker), I fear loss or separation. To avoid any fragmentation, I will avoid conflict. In my unhealthiest states, I will disassociate from myself, from others, or from reality altogether in order to keep anything from affecting me too much.

At my best, however, I find peace within myself so I can be content in any situation. With the wisdom of the Enneagram, I can embrace the nuances of a flawed personality and transform them into powerful assets.

Resources

    • Enneagram Institute – Two of the major teachers of the Enneagram, Russ Hudson and Don Richard Riso, founded the Enneagram Institute. They offer paid classes throughout the year, they’ve written a few books together, and I regularly reference their free resource.
    • Enneagrammer – The team at Enneagrammer provides modern perspectives on the Enneagram that incorporate art and typing through collages. They have a lot of refreshing material on instinctual variants on their website, an active Facebook group, and a podcast.
    • Katherine Fauvre – Teacher, researcher, and coach Katherine Fauvre developed Tritype theory, which incorporates one Enneagram type per center of intelligence (head, heart, and gut). For example, my core type is a 9, but my tritype is 937 (3 from the heart center and 7 from the head center).
    • The Narrative Enneagram – This nonprofit school offers curriculum, professional training, and a learning community dedicated to studying the Enneagram and integrating psychology, spirituality, and somatics. Their Narrative tradition uses stories and interviews with people of various types to personalize the personality types.
    • Enneagram & Coffee – Sarajane Case discusses the Enneagram and how it can help us with productivity, finding a work/life balance, and improving ourselves.
