The Enneagram Basics: So What? How to apply it

  • Post author:

We covered a lot of information in the Enneagram basics series. It is natural to feel overwhelmed or confused by the different avenues one could use to explore the Enneagram. Here’s what I recommend:

Find your type. Maybe just from reading the post about the nine types, you know your type because it stood out to you. You could find your type with a test — there are many free ones online, and there are also extensive ones you can pay for. Keep in mind that tests may not be the most accurate way to do this.

I believe reading descriptions and choosing which one seems the most ‘you’ is a better way to assess yourself. Instead of rating yourself on scales created by the test creators, descriptions have an overall summary and most distinct traits of the type. You can also hop on a call with me; part of my job as an Enneagram life coach is to help you clarify your type, even if you think you know it already.

Accept your type, but don’t identify with it too strongly. All types are good and important to the whole. You bring something very valuable to the table, whether you’re an 8, a 5, or a 1. You have unique strengths and a way of seeing the world that others can learn from.

That being said, don’t cling to it too much. Our personality is a protection from perceived threats of our environment. It’s a description of you, not a prescription of what you have to be.

Seek to understand yourself for the purpose of bettering yourself. Some people covet this knowledge because it makes them feel more capable and confident (looking at you, 5s and 6s).

The true power of the Enneagram lies in its potential to lead you to growth. Every type, when healthy, has a powerful presence to offer others and enrich lives, including your own. When we do honest inner work, we deepen our relationships and become outstanding members of our communities.
